Our Intent

The 2014 national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific skills required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

At Holycroft, we encourage children to be inquisitive by planning hands-on, engaging opportunities to investigate their own ideas. Throughout the programmes of study, children will acquire and develop the key knowledge for each unit as well as the application of scientific skills. Working scientifically skills are built on progressively as children move through school so that they are able to ask questions, use equipment, conduct investigations, build arguments and explain concepts with confidence.

Science Overview of working scientifically

A range of working scientifically skills will be taught in each unit and all skills will be covered throughout the year. The TAPS plans provide a suggested overview based on the skills and topics for each year group.
