Communication and Language

Communication and language is one of the three prime areas in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment, to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Spoken language underpins all other areas of learning and development and it is vital that they have access to many quality conversations with adults and peers throughout the day in a language-rich environment. The children gain experience from listening to a range of stories and texts, rhymes and practise embedding new vocabulary in different contexts. Through conversation, storytelling and role play, children become fluent and confident in using a range of vocabulary and language structures.
